Note: If you have the Garmin MI Trails Only map installed, you'll have to uninstall it before installing this new one. I mistakenly used the same ID number for both maps, so they'll conflict. There's a new version of the Trails Only map which has a different ID so they can both be installed at the same time.
My maps, data exchange, guide and forum are free and will continue to be free, so use them and enjoy. However, making and maintaining the maps, helping people install them, and keeping this website running takes a large amount of time and costs some money, so if you find this site to be useful, please consider making a donation.
This Michigan snowmobile trail map is made from data from the Michigan DNR and data contributed by Darin Diebold, extcat, MKS and others. I've overlayed the data on the paper maps from the Michigan DNR and it all looks to be accurate and it appears that every major trail is covered in the Upper Peninsula, and it now includes the Lower Peninsula too. All the trails are labeled by their common names. I've had this DNR data since August and was advised by the DNR that there were problems with it that would be corrected soon. It now appears that the project has been put on hold until February or March, so I decided to go ahead with the map. It looks to be pretty good, but I did notice some strange looking spots in the L.P. where two lines overlap each other with one being far more detailed, and that sort of thing. Use at your own risk, and if you find any glaring errors, let me know so I can correct it. When the new, cleaner data is available from the DNR, I'll update the map with it.
This map also includes a small portion of trails across the Wisconsin border, and will match up with my Wisconsin map. The thicker lines are DNR data and the thinner lines are data contributed by users of the site. As with all of my maps, this should not be relied upon solely for navigation. Always bring a backup map or two, check with locals for conditions and trail closures, etc. Below are versions for Garmin, Magellan, and Lowrance GPSrs. Two versions for each brand are available. One has lakes, rivers, and roads in addition to the trails, and the other is a map of just the trails. The trails only Garmin version is transparent and can be put on top of other Garmin maps, such as USA Topo. The Garmin installer will allow you to choose a color for the trails and should work with all newer Garmin mapping units. If you have an older unit, or don't want the colors, that can be selected during installation. The Magellan and Lowrance trails only versions are not transparent, but are included for those who don't want the clutter of the lakes an roads, or those without much map memory. Note: Please do not contact Garmin, Lowrance, or Magellan if you have problems with these maps. Look around on this site for a solution to your problem, post in the forum, or contact me. These are unofficial maps and have nothing to do with Garmin, Lowrance, or Magellan.
As much as I'd like to cover more trails, I can only ride so many miles each Winter, so to make this map more complete, I need your help. If this map is useful to you, then it means you have a GPS, and if you have a GPS, then you too can collect tracklogs! Just set it to record a tracklog (one track point every 2 or 3 seconds is good) and bring it along each time you ride - it's as simple as that. If you can, mark shelters, hazzards, gas stations, etc. When you get back, transfer your data to your computer (via Mapsource or some other method), and upload it here. All useful data will be added to the next version of the map. Spread the word! If you'd like to be e-mailed when this map is updated, enter your e-mail address: |
